How Often Should You Clean Solar Panels?

There’s no single number — but most solar sites land somewhere between once a month and once a quarter. The right frequency is whatever keeps soiling losses below the cost of cleaning. Here’s how to find that point for your own array.

What drives cleaning frequency

• Climate & rainfall — regular rain rinses panels for free, so wet climates need cleaning less often. Dry seasons and arid regions need it far more.
• Local dust sources — farmland, construction, unpaved roads, cement plants and coastal salt all accelerate soiling.
• Tilt angle — steeper panels self-clean better; low-tilt commercial roofs hold dirt.
• Bird activity — droppings create hard, localized hotspots that don’t rinse off and can trigger cell damage if left.
• Tariff / energy value — the more each kWh is worth, the sooner cleaning pays back, so high-value sites clean more often.

Rough starting points

• Temperate, rainy regions: 2–4 times a year is often enough.
• Dry or dusty regions: monthly to every 6–8 weeks during the dry season.
• Desert / heavy-dust / agricultural sites: as often as every 1–2 weeks at peak.

Treat these as starting points, not rules. The honest answer for any specific site is: clean when the lost generation is worth more than the clean.
