Wet vs. Dry Solar Panel Cleaning — and Why the Brush Matters

Use dry cleaning for loose dust and water cleaning for anything stuck on — and match the bristle to the job. Getting this right protects the glass, saves water and gets panels cleaner in one pass. Here’s the practical version.

Dry cleaning: fast, waterless, for loose dust

When the soiling is dry, powdery dust, a rotating brush sweeps it off with no water at all. Dry cleaning is ideal where water is scarce or expensive, and it avoids leaving mineral spots as the panel dries. For dry sweeping, a roller or a robot generally clears a light dust layer faster and more evenly than a twin-disc brush.

The limit: dry brushing won’t shift baked-on grime, mud or dried bird droppings — pushing hard, dry deposits across the glass risks micro-scratches. That’s when you switch to water.

Water (wet) cleaning: for stubborn, stuck-on soiling

Adding water softens and floats away the deposits a dry brush can’t move — mud, salt, pollen paste and droppings. A water-fed brush lets the bristles glide rather than scrape. On sensitive sites, feeding the brush with reverse-osmosis (RO) water leaves a spot-free finish because there are no dissolved minerals to dry on the glass.

Why the bristle material matters

Not all brushes are equal. Two materials dominate quality solar cleaning, and they behave differently:

  • PBT (harder): better for wet cleaning of stubborn dirt and dried droppings — it has the stiffness to lift baked-on soiling.
  • Nylon (softer, more wear-resistant): better for dry dust sweeping, where a gentler bristle is kinder to the glass.

This is why our crawler robot carries both: a PBT brush for wet work and a soft nylon brush for dry dust. Our handheld electric brushes use modified PBT for all-round wet-and-dry performance. One more detail that matters: modern solar brushes are tufted (bristles set into a smooth plate) rather than the old woven-cord style, which could trap grit and mark the glass.

A quick rule of thumb

  • Light, dry dust: dry-sweep with a roller or robot — save the water.
  • Stuck-on grime, mud, droppings: water cleaning with PBT bristles.
  • Spot-free finish on sensitive sites: water cleaning fed by an RO unit.
