What “soiling” actually is
Soiling is the build-up of dust, sand, pollen, salt, industrial fallout and bird droppings on the glass. It blocks light before it ever reaches the cells. Two things make it worse: low rainfall (nothing rinses the glass) and low tilt angle (dirt sits instead of sliding off). That’s why ground-mount farms in arid climates and low-slope commercial rooftops tend to suffer most.
How much output does it cost?
Field studies and site data across the industry generally point to a wide range:
- Temperate, rainy regions: often ~2–7% average annual loss — rain does a lot of the cleaning for you.
- Dry, dusty or agricultural regions: commonly 10–25% and rising through the dry season.

On larger or dustier sites that math usually favours regular, scheduled cleaning — and it favours methods that cut the biggest cost, which is almost always labour.
